BOOTMGR is missing при установке с USB-Flash

Выбирал дистрибутив чтобы поставить на ASUS EeePC 1015bx Что ставить новобранцу?. Но вот же незадача. Столкнулся с новой проблемой. Делаю загрузочную флешку. Т.к. сегодня ни у кого из ближайшего окружения не нашёл компа с линуксом способ http://habrahabr.ru/post/53219/ отпадает. Решил воспользоваться unetbootin-windows. Вроде все ок. Загрузочная флеха готова. Однако, как только начинается загрузка с флешки — опа: BOOTMGR is missing, Press alt+ctrl+delete to restart.

Думал может на дебиан ругается, писали что с ним могу проблемы быть, но не тут то было c xubuntu 12.04 такой же «пирог» получился. Кто знает как бороться?

BOOTMGR это же вендовый загрузчик.
Честное слово не знаю что у вас там эти унетбутины записывают, неужто он виндовый загрузчик туда запихал для запуска установщика линукса.

По-моему самый разумный вариант: установить загрузчик ручками, положить туда установщик и данные.
Вкратце:
1) качаешь загрузчик, т.к. ты пользователь винды, то советую grub4dos
2) качаешь установщик
3) записываешь на флешку бутсектор (в наборе должен быть ехе для этого), и кладешь в корень grldr menu.lst vmlinuz initrd.gz и скачанный ISO-образ дебиана
4) в menu.lst вставляешь:
title Debian Squeezy Installer x86
kernel /vmlinuz
initrd /initrd.gz
5) загружаешься, устанавливаешь, добро пожаловать!

К слову так же просто можно запустить установку с обычного hdd. Самое главное этот способ прозрачен и результат предсказуем, в отличие от этих мутных утилит, которые непонятно что делают.

Unetbootin не работает с NTFS.

Записать сд и ставить с юсб-сидирома?

Таки удалось мне запустить инсталл (после того как распаковалось все чудо на флешку, запустил exe, он создал ещё одну строку при выборе ОС, нажав которую запускается инсталл), но как и говорили дебиан пытается найти CD для инсталла, а флэш-драйв мой и видеть не желает. Думал такое же сделать с xubuntu, однако этот же exe в конце ошибкой отмахивается. Попробую Ваш способ.

usb-cdrom’a нет под рукой.

Насколько я помню, в корне флешки в EFI/BOOT должен лежать файл bootx64.efi, который при создании флешки стандартными средствами извлекается из какого-то img в корне.

Потому что это cd-инсталлер с cd-диска. Ищет данные он только по cd приводам.
В моем способе предлагается hhd-инсталлер. Ему нужен только образ в корне диска.

Тот, что там есть, работает только под DOS и Linux.

I know it is not directly related to linux, but I thought I should post anyway because I’m trying to install Linux Mint 15.

So here is what happened:

I’ve delleted all the partitions on my brother’s laptop including the 200mb System partitionth through recover CD called Boot-Repair-Disk from ubuntu website. The thing is I was going to clean install Windows 7 on unallocated space as it would make a System Partition automatically.

When I restarted the laptop I got «Bootmgr is missing» «Press control alt del to restart» error. I tried to boot windows 7 repair disk, but it won’t boot neither from DVD or USB. I tried the same with «Boot-Repai-Disk» software both from DVD and USB. I set Bios settings to default and repeated the entire process but no; it gives the same error («Bootmgr is missing»).

It seems that the DVD drive and USB drives are working fine because I can see they are trying to boot. It’s just when they do that I get a black screen and hyphen ( — ) appearing and diasappearing till I shut down the laptop.

I would appreciate If you tell me how to get to Windows Recover Environment or command prom. The rest is easy; I would inititiate bootrec and bootsect commands to fix the problem. It would help if I could boot Linux Mint 15.

Please help me guys. I feel so embarassed, now, that I messed up my brother’s laptop. He’s coming home soon.

I had this kind of thing on one computer a friend brought to me for helping.

Win7 crash after boot from Hard disk.
cannot boot from USB
cannot boot from DVD.

so what I did was:
open casing
unplug the cables to Hard disk and cables to DVD.

plug in a known working , bootable USB flash drive with Linux OS

it booted up and so it is OK.

Then I power down computer

add back the DVD cables
boot again, this time it can boot from DVD

so I power down and put back hard disk cable
now it still can boot from DVD and from USB

I run Live from USB, try to check hard disk, it was so corrupted that, at the end, I decided to reformat the whole hard disk, reinstall Win7 and since then it has been working quite well in Win7..
thought it might help you to try out. no guaranteed

BOOTMGR is missing (USB installation)

Hello, I have windows seven installed and am not so happy with it. So i’ve been want to switch to ubuntu.

I use a USB to install my OS’s, because my netbook doesn’t have a cd drive, but when I boot off of my USB I get:

the BOOTMGR is missing
press any key to restart.

How can I fix this?

Well the reason why this pops up in your setup is because you probably did copy the files right over to your flash drive. Did you copy the .iso image «ubuntu i386» with the usb installer or did you just copy the files using winrar or unetbootin. If you did not try usb installer found on the ubuntu flash drive installation portion of the site, or just go to www.pendrivelinux.com

The problem might be with the format of ur flash drive. format ur flash drive with FAT32 and then try USB installer, it should work then. Sorry for the late reply but, i m new to the ubuntu community.

Thanks hary106, I had the same problem as Brii. I had formated in NTFS and had the BOOTMGR message. I formated again in fat32 and everything went great.
Is there a reason why ntfs fails here?

I installed Windows 7 on /dev/sda4, then with a Gentoo-minimal CD manually set and formatted sda1 through sda3 as /boot, / and swap (which probably wiped whatever Windows had in the 100MB sda1) before changing my mind and installing Ubuntu onto them without it reformatting again. While it didn’t give me a «You have Windows here, dual boot?» option, it got Grub2 booting Ubuntu fine. It did not, however, include an entry for Windows 7.

Not sure how os-prober works, and wondering why it didn’t find the Windows partition (or at least put anything about it in /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober). The /dev/sda4 partition apparently wasn’t added to /etc/fstab during installation, but can be mounted fine.

I thus attempted to manually piece together an entry into /etc/grub.d/40_custom from examples I’ve seen on this forum:

(The UUID was obtained by running «blkid»)

When selecting the «Windows 7» entry at the GRUB menu at boot time, however, it gives me «BOOTMGR is missing. Ctrl-alt-del to reboot» or some such.

Here is the output of the boot info script:

(The lilo.conf part was from having installed LILO instead, since that’s what I’m familiar with. It did not work either.)

GRUB did find the widows partition. The boot doesn’t work because there are no boot files there. If your PC came preinstalled with Win7, those boot files were in a different partition — one that you erased or removed.

I did it sometime with windows xp and worked . I don’t know if its the same for windows 7.

As mentioned above, two of your windows boot files are missing and they normally are in the 100MB hidden Windows boot/repair partition. That has nothing to do with an Ubuntu /boot partition (which desktops do not normally need).

It looks like you overwrote your sda1 Windows boot partition with the Ubuntu /boot files.

Windows does not have to have the separate boot partition and you can repair your Windows since it is a primary partition. But the boot flag has to be moved from sda1 to sda4. Windows uses boot flag, grub does not use boot flag. And Windows normally only repairs the «active» partition which is the one with the boot flag. Use gparted or Windows repairCD to move boot flag/active partition first. Then you can run Windows repairs.
